Basic Information About Malta

Visiting another country of deciding to move permanently is not easy task. You might worry about your accommodation, privacy, security and hundred more things. We are therefore answering most of the common questions we receive.

Currency

As of January 2008 Malta adopted the Euro.

Banks

Banks opening hours are: 0830 hrs to 1330 hrs, Mondays to Fridays and up to 1130 hrs on Saturdays. ATM's are situated in all major commercial and tourist areas.

Time

Malta follows Central European Time (CET) which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Electricity

Electricity runs on 240 volts, single phase the square fitting standard 3 pin British style plugs and sockets are used.

Water

Tap water is safe for drinking.

Religion

Malta is predominantly Roman Catholic, however there are also churches belonging to various other religions.

Beach Facilities

There are a number of sandy beaches, mainly in the northern part of the Island, namely Mellieha Bay, Paradise Bay, Golden Sands and Little Armier. In Gozo you will find Ramla Bay and Xlendi.

Swimming in Malta is completely safe and our waters are literally crystal clear, beach facilities include, sun beds, umbrellas, bars & restaurants, showers and changing rooms. On most beaches you will also find various water sports, such as jet skies, surfboards, paddling boats, kayaks, wakeboarding and more.

Medical Care

Malta's general hospital is the new state of the art Mater Dei Hospital in Swatar (located on the Birkirkara bypass), however besides the Mater Dei, one can also find a another 3 main private hospitals. Furthermore one can find various medical clinics in every district.

Shopping

Shops are usually opened from 0900 hrs to 1300 hrs and 1600 hrs to 1900 hrs. However in most tourist areas shop stay open throughout the day and stay open until 2200 hrs. The main shopping areas may be found in Valletta, Sliema and St. Julians. All major credit cards are accepted at leading shops and restaurants.

Public Transport

The main bus station is situated in Valletta, where one can find bus routes to all over Malta, with various sub stations situated in every major city. Transport commences at 0700am and runs through until 11.00pm.
