Mellieha

Mellieha

The town of Mellieha is European Destination of Excellence, officially recognized as one of the most enticing parts of Malta - and is a truly great place to live.

Mellieha is situated further North from St. Paul's Bay in the northwestern part of Malta. It sits on top of a hill, overlooking the 'tail end' of Malta that includes Mellieha Bay (Ghadira to the Maltese) making the locality a very popular tourist destination during the summer months.

Before the British Colonization of Malta only a few villagers lived in the area. For centuries the area was abandoned due to fear from attacks of pirates. Mellieha as a village developed under British colonization, encouraging people to settle in the area by giving favourable land leases to the population. This is when the village flourished.

Mellieha boasts of an attractive hilltop position with a central street winding downhill surrounded by fertile valleys and breath taking panoramas of the countryside, Mellieha Bay (which is the largest one in Malta) and northwards towards Gozo and Comino. Over the years it transformed into one of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations. The town centre boasts of its splendid hotels, excellent restaurants, traditional Maltese souvenir shops and a majestic baroque church (built in late 19th century) that dominates over the village.

Mellieha Bay is ideal for families with small children. It is 1.5 Km long sandy beach with crystal clear shallow water abundant in water sports facilities and beach bars. Other nearby beaches are the splendid Golden Sands (Ghajn Tuffieha), Riviera, Paradise Bay, Armier and Gnejna, all with public facilities and various beach bars.

The town's people (Mellihin) are renowned for their laborious nature, their friendliness, ironic sense of humor, and hospitality. Those who visit Mellieha do not merely enjoy themselves but they feel at home. This has encouraged a lot of foreigners choose to settle in Mellieha.

Santa Maria Estate, along with neighboring Kortin, is a large villa community overlooking breathtaking views of the Bay. All villas in Santa Maria Estate enjoy a minimum of 1200 square metres of land. Given the limited supply of land in Malta, this proved to be a major attraction. These detached bungalow style homes enjoy uniquely large gardens, outdoor pools and plenty of entertainment.

Within Santa Maria Estate also lies Tas-Sellum, a graceful terraced development with a cluster of luxury apartments and penthouses and excellent on-site facilities for its residents. Tas-Sellum is a seaside architectural gem set in superbly landscaped grounds on a steep hillside, with most apartments commanding incredible, and often unobstructed, views of the Mediterranean Sea below.
